Inherited Mindsets
A Pattern I Cannot Unsee
This past weekend at the Body Mind Spirit Expo, Alexandra had the honor of working with dozens of people, each with their own story, pain, and inner longing for healing. As she held space, one pattern became impossible to ignore: so many people are carrying emotional burdens that did not start with them.
I saw the fear of being seen. I heard echoes of "not enough." I felt the weight of hesitation, scarcity, and silence, not rooted in the client's own life, but in the lives of their grandparents.
Yes, the grandparent effect is real. Trauma and limiting beliefs do not always show up in the generation before us. Sometimes they skip a generation and land in us. Once you see it, you cannot unsee it.
The Grandparent Effect: Inherited Emotional Patterns
Alexandra wrote a deeper reflection on what we carry, what we inherit, and how we begin to heal what was never ours to begin with.
Back to the LibrarySelf-Reflection Exercise
If you have ever felt like your mindset does not fully belong to you, or your fears feel older than your own story, try this simple but powerful practice.
Step 1: Create Four Sections
Grab your journal or notes app and create one section for each grandparent: maternal grandmother, maternal grandfather, paternal grandmother, and paternal grandfather.
Step 2: Ask What They Carried
Reflect on their emotional nature, fears, relationships, beliefs about success or love, and what may have stayed hidden or unspoken.
Step 3: Look for Repetition
Shift the focus back to you. Which traits, fears, or patterns do you carry? Which ones may have skipped a generation and shown up in your life?
You may discover that you are holding energy that does not belong to you, but has been with you all along.
